Warsh's Hawkish Hokey-Pokey: Bitcoin Holds Its Breath at $75.8K 🎩

Bitcoin fell nearly 3% to $75,800 ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate decision on Wednesday, after the Senate's defeat of the Clarity Act weakened another potential source of support for the largest cryptocurrency. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its interest rate decision at 2:00 PM ET, with Chair Kevin Warsh set to hold a press conference 30 minutes later. The broader digital asset market also faced downward pressure, with tokens including JUP, XLM, and ICP each declining by about 10%.

Financial markets have almost fully priced in a 25-basis-point rate hike, which would lift the federal funds target range to 3.75%-4%, according to the CME's FedWatch tool. Nearly every major investment bank also expects at least one more rate hike before the end of the year, according to data shared by Wall Street Journal reporter Nick Timiraos. Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chief economist at the Institute of International Finance, said the primary narrative is not today's anticipated rate hike but rather the additional policy tightening expected later this year.

"Tomorrow's Fed meeting is a nightmare for Warsh. There's no way he can live up to all the hikes priced, so the press conference will likely disappoint markets. The Dollar is likely to fall and long yields likely to rise," Brooks said. A weaker dollar typically supports dollar-denominated assets, including bitcoin and gold, reflecting a well-documented negative correlation between digital assets and the U.S. currency, though past performance does not guarantee future price movements.
