Hunter Biden plans to launch a meme coin called LAPTOP on September 9, minting 1 billion tokens on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network created by Coinbase in 2023. The Wall Street Journal first reported the token issuance on Monday, citing sources familiar with the plan. Biden confirmed the launch on X with the ticker and a 31-second Fox News montage about the laptop he left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019. The post drew more than 1.7 million views and 250,000 within its first hour.

Founders, including Biden personally, will hold 30% of the 1 billion supply, locked for six months and released gradually over a two-year vesting schedule. Another 20% of the supply is allocated to charity donations, liquidity, payments to exchange partners and market makers, and accounting and legal costs for the token's foundation. A separate 20% is reserved for two rounds of airdrops: one tranche goes to subscribers of Biden's Substack and to members of Andrew Callaghan's Channel 5 mailing list, and another tranche is reserved for wallets that lost money on TRUMP, the meme coin President Donald Trump launched ahead of his January 2025 inauguration. Callaghan told the Wall Street Journal that neither he nor Channel 5 had anything to do with the coin, and that Channel 5 does not consider crypto a legitimate investment. The team also plans to burn 30% of LAPTOP's supply if certain criteria are met, including Bitcoin hitting a new all-time high or a Democrat winning the 2028 election.

TRUMP itself remains heavily concentrated, with entities tied to the Trump Organization controlling 80% of its supply under a multi-year vesting schedule, and both TRUMP and the Melania meme coin have lost more than 90% of their respective market capitalizations since launching in 2025. Biden's LAPTOP explicitly positions itself as a counter to TRUMP, branding itself around the laptop controversy that consumed American politics ahead of the 2020 election.

The crypto community's response on Monday skewed negative. Replies to Biden's announcement included criticism from the pseudonymous DeFi developer scupytrooples, who wrote "Dude, f*ck you. Still time to walk this back," and from trader DonAlt, who called the launch "an utter embarrassment." The pseudonymous investor Byzantine General told Biden to "never come back." Crypto exchange Kraken deleted a social media post promoting the token after traders questioned the promotion, though the exchange has not commented on its listing plans and LAPTOP's website states that exchange listings will be announced when trading begins. Within minutes of Biden's post, several copycat LAPTOP tokens appeared on other networks; no official contract address has surfaced, and anything trading ahead of the September 9 launch should be treated as fake.
