LINK's SWIFT Hookup Has Banks Saying ISO-much, While BTC Waits for Fed 🍴

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin opened the week below $80,000, down roughly 1% in 24 hours, after an August rally that delivered more than 20% gains over the prior 30 days. The largest cryptocurrency was rejected from $82,000 twice in the past two weeks and now trades under its 50-week moving average near $81,000, a level it lost in May. According to the source report, BTC sits in a compression zone following a major spike in late August, with analysts split between a trend reversal pushing prices higher and a so-called Bart Simpson pattern that would send prices back toward $65,000 within days. Traders this month are watching two scheduled catalysts: fresh inflation data and the Federal Reserve's September 16 rate decision, after a stronger-than-expected August jobs report on Friday raised the odds of a hike.

While majors cooled, Chainlink's native token $LINK climbed to $13.64 on Monday, its highest level since January 18. The 6.8% 24-hour gain made $LINK the top performer among the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, while the rest of the group traded flat to lower. Open interest on $LINK derivatives contracts also reached $784 million, an 11-month high.

The rally followed a deal announced last week with Bottomline, described as a top-three SWIFT services provider handling payments automation and treasury management for more than 600 banks and serving roughly 1,200 financial institutions and 10,000 businesses worldwide. Under the agreement, Bottomline will connect its existing systems to public and private blockchains through Chainlink's infrastructure, using two products: Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), live since July 2023 and now spanning more than 60 blockchains, and Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE), which the company says coordinates payment workflows end-to-end. Banks continue sending their existing ISO 20022 messages, the global standard for cross-border payment instructions that hit 97% adoption after a November 2025 switchover, with Chainlink positioned as the connector underneath rather than a replacement.

Neither Chainlink nor Bottomline has disclosed a go-live date or named a pilot bank. SWIFT itself has previously tested Chainlink, running interoperability experiments in 2023 with more than 10 institutions including Citi and BNY Mellon to move tokenized assets onto Ethereum's Sepolia testnet. Standard Chartered listed SWIFT among institutions already using Chainlink services last month when the bank set a $200 price target.
