Bitcoin's Best Month of the Year Came With a Few Cracks in the Foundation 🪨
Bitcoin closed August up 24.5%, marking one of its strongest monthly performances of the year, according to data tracked by CryptoRank. The rally extended well beyond the largest cryptocurrency: the combined market capitalization of the top-100 altcoins grew 26.5%, with the average altcoin gaining 24.5%. Even when outliers were excluded, the remaining tokens posted a 17.1% gain, indicating that smaller and mid-sized assets participated broadly rather than simply tracking Bitcoin's lead.
DeFi lending activity also accelerated during the month. Active loans across major protocols rose from $20.1B in June to $26.1B in August, a roughly 30% increase over two months. Aave [AAVE] accounted for more than half of that total at $12.5B, followed by Morpho [MORPHO] and Spark [SPK] as the next-largest contributors.
Bitcoin's price moved from approximately $63K to $81.5K over a two-week stretch, prompting a sharp increase in profit-taking from long-term holders. According to CryptoQuant, profit-taking spiked twice in a single week, ranking among the heaviest sell-off days of the year outside the January crash. Selling pressure has continued since those peaks.
Demand signals in the U.S. turned positive for several days late in the month before fading, while funding rates reached a yearly high during the same period, indicating elevated leverage among traders. Together, these metrics point to a rally with narrower underlying support than the headline price gains would suggest.
