The Laptop Awakens: Hunter Biden's $LAPTOP Token to Airdrop 20% to $TRUMP Holders 🪙

—By our Altcoins & Tokens Desk3 min read

Hunter Biden announced Monday that he plans to launch a memecoin based on his well-known laptop, a device whose existence and contents were the subject of intense media scrutiny before the 2020 US presidential election. Posting on X, Biden signaled a Wednesday launch for the token under the ticker $LAPTOP. The Wall Street Journal reported that 20% of the one-billion token supply will be sent to Substack subscribers, members of a mailing list and investors in President Donald Trump's Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin, which has fallen roughly 97% since reaching an all-time high price in January 2025.

The laptop, which Biden has said contained private information protected by state privacy laws, became a focal point for right-wing media outlets during the 2024 campaign against his father, the former president. Biden filed two lawsuits over the laptop's disclosure. Since Joe Biden left office in January 2025, his son has been more vocal about crypto and blockchain, criticizing the Trump family's involvement in the industry through World Liberty Financial and calling the venture "corruption at a scale we've never seen," comparing its practices to those of collapsed exchange FTX and citing ties to foreign governments including the UAE. In June, he said that "decentralized digital currency and the blockchain are the inevitable future."

According to WSJ, the LAPTOP founders hold 30% of the token supply and will burn up to 30% of the memecoins depending on certain events, including a Democrat winning the presidency in 2028, the price of Bitcoin (BTC) reaching an all-time high and LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation exceeding that of TRUMP. The launch comes as lawmakers are weighing the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the CLARITY Act, which is scheduled for a cloture vote in the Senate on Sept. 15, putting additional attention on the Trump family's crypto ventures.

Cointelegraph did not receive an immediate response from the White House when asked for comment, and the LAPTOP project's principals have not publicly committed to a written roadmap beyond the burn-trigger conditions outlined to the WSJ. Biden has continued to invoke privacy laws in describing the laptop's handling and has framed his memecoin effort as a direct challenge to the dominance of TRUMP and similar tokens tied to political figures. The news underscores how token launches tied to American political personalities are becoming a recurring flashpoint as regulators and lawmakers work to set clearer rules for the broader digital asset market.
