SEC Hits Brakes on Tokenization, Wall Street's DeFi Cruise Control Goes Limp 🚦

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk2 min read

Tokenization-focused equities declined Friday after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission postponed its planned "innovation exemption" and canceled a meeting where commissioners were set to consider new rules for certain crypto investment contracts. The delay marks another setback for the industry's push to bring traditional securities onto blockchain-based trading infrastructure.

Bullish (BLSH), which owns CoinDesk and is acquiring transfer agent Equiniti as it builds tokenized-securities infrastructure, fell about 8% from $24.39 in early trading, reversing gains from its second-quarter earnings release. Blockchain lending platform Figure (FIGR) gave back its post-earnings advance, dropping roughly 9% from Thursday's session high. Coinbase (COIN), pursuing its own tokenized-stock offering and recently selecting Abu Dhabi as an offshore hub, slipped 2% to $148.44. Stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL) declined nearly 4% to $71.60; the company also operates the USYC tokenized Treasury product, which holds roughly $3 billion of assets. Securitize (SECZ), BlackRock's tokenization partner and issuer of the BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund, was down 5% earlier in the session before reversing losses and stabilizing following Thursday's 27% plunge on earnings.

The moves come after CoinDesk reported late Thursday that the SEC was preparing to further delay the innovation exemption, which is intended to ease trading of tokenized securities. Concerns from the White House and Wall Street over the proposal's legal footing and potential market impact have held up the plan, and the agency also scrapped a Friday meeting that was set to address a tailored offering regime for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets.

Clear Street managing director Owen Lau called the delay a "speed bump" for tokenization, adding that it may lengthen adoption timelines without derailing momentum behind tokenized assets and 24/7 trading infrastructure. Uniswap's UNI token fell 7%, leading losses on the CoinDesk 20 index, as traders had expected the exemption to provide relief for securities trading on decentralized-finance venues.
