Hormuz, Schormuz: Crypto Watches a Geopolitical Soap Opera While BTC Hugs $65K

Bitcoin traded above $65,000 on Monday as reports emerged that Iran may strike a deal with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing one of the week's biggest geopolitical flashpoints and pulling risk assets higher. BTC rose 0.54% to $65,209 and ether gained 0.86% to $1,925 since midnight UTC, tracking a 0.45% rise in Nasdaq 100 index futures. The altcoin market remained cautiously positioned, with the altcoin season indicator sitting at 37/100 and capital still concentrated in bitcoin. Pump.fun (PUMP) led altcoin gains with a 5.39% move, while aggregate liquidations fell 32% to $85 million.

By Tuesday, the relief trade had unraveled. President Donald Trump's demand for 50 years of compensation from Iran as a condition of any negotiation ended the Hormuz optimism and pushed Brent crude up to $89.08, more than 12% above last week's low. Bitcoin gained 0.26% since midnight UTC to trade near $63,499 over 24 hours, a 1.68% decline on the day. Ether outperformed BTC since midnight but remained 2.4% lower over 24 hours at $1,861.93. U.S. equity index futures stayed flat as traders shifted focus to Wednesday's CPI report, now the week's defining catalyst. Strategy added to selling pressure by offloading a further 1,690 BTC on Monday, its fourth consecutive weekly reduction, with the company not having bought bitcoin since June.

Derivatives positioning shifted alongside the news cycle. On Monday, the taker long-short ratio in crypto futures had flipped bullish at 52% longs, bitcoin futures open interest slipped back below 750K BTC, and ETH open interest fell to 13.35 million tokens, the lowest since May 3 and well below the late-May peak of 15.98 million. SOL futures saw renewed activity, with open interest rebounding to 64.60 million tokens from around 60 million as the token recovered from nearly $70 to over $76 and broke above the Ichimoku cloud. By Tuesday, futures trading volume had surged 51% to $143.15 billion over 24 hours while total open interest held steady around $115.6 billion, indicating churn rather than fresh positioning. The taker long-short ratio reverted to neutral, with longs and shorts each near 50% of volume.

XRP emerged as the standout derivative mover, with active futures contracts growing 14% to 2.72 billion tokens, the highest since October, as the token threatened to drop below $1 for the first time since 2024. LINK, ETH and HBAR were also among the day's open interest gainers, while CC, ZEC and AVAX led open interest losses. Funding rates remained slightly positive across the complex.
