🦊 MetaMask Gives AI Agents the Keys — But Drew the Map First
MetaMask launched Agent Wallet on Thursday, a self-custodial wallet that lets artificial intelligence agents execute on-chain transactions within user-defined limits, expanding the Consensys-owned platform's push into AI-powered crypto trading. The wallet is aimed at traders and developers using AI agents to monitor markets, identify opportunities, and execute transactions autonomously, according to MetaMask.
Rather than giving an AI agent unrestricted access to a wallet, users can set spending caps, approve specific protocols, choose risk settings, and select between "Guard Mode" and "Beast Mode," which offer different levels of automation. The product follows a June rollout to roughly 200 early access users and targets the same market as Coinbase's Agentic Wallets, introduced in February, and MoonPay's MoonAgents platform, which expanded in March and reached Telegram in July.
Agent Wallet integrates with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, and OpenCode, and operates across Hyperliquid and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks. It also supports gas abstraction, allowing users to pay network fees with the asset being transferred rather than holding a chain's native token. "Never worry about paying for gas," the company wrote. "Agents can transfer and swap without holding a chain's native token for gas; MetaMask settles the network fee in the token being moved."
MetaMask said Agent Wallet reduces security risks by enforcing wallet-level permissions rather than trusting AI agents to act safely. Supported transactions pass through transaction simulation, threat scanning, and smart transactions MEV protection, and the company offers Transaction Protection coverage of up to $10,000 per month for eligible transactions that pass its security checks but still result in losses. "This security-first model is why Agent Wallet is built around rules, not blind delegation," MetaMask said. "The agent can act, but it acts inside the user's boundaries."
The launch comes as crypto companies compete to build infrastructure for AI agents capable of managing portfolios, executing trades, and interacting with decentralized applications. Consensys, the Ethereum software firm founded by Joe Lubin, develops MetaMask, which Decrypt described as holding roughly a quarter of the wallet market. No token is attached to the product.
