Step App clocks out: move-to-earn pioneer winds down Aug. 21 as FITFI prints a 99.9% reality check 📉

Step App, the move-to-earn platform that once turned smartphone steps into on-chain rewards, will wind down all services by Aug. 21 after four years in operation, the company announced Wednesday on X. The team urged users to unstake locked tokens and manage their exchange positions before the shutdown date. "We are incredibly proud of what Step App achieved — not just as a product, but as a movement," Step App said in its statement. The project joins a growing list of crypto firms scaling back or closing during an extended market downturn.

The shutdown marks a steep fall for a sector that drew heavy investment during the 2021–2022 bull run, when move-to-earn apps promised to merge fitness tracking with token incentives. Step App's governance and utility token, FITFI, continued to slide following the announcement. At publishing time, FITFI traded at $0.0001624, down 99.9% from its all-time high of around $0.73 recorded in May 2022, according to CoinGecko data. Cointelegraph contacted Step App for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

The wind-down follows the closure of Proof of Play, another blockchain gaming project that ceased operations after its on-chain gaming thesis fell short of expectations. Step App had positioned itself as a Web3 fitness layer, onboarding users through geo-based activities, staking mechanics and a social economy built around tokenized movement. The Aug. 21 cutoff gives holders roughly three weeks to withdraw staked positions and settle any remaining on-exchange balances tied to the FITFI ecosystem.

Token holders retaining positions on centralized venues after the wind-down deadline risk illiquidity, as exchanges typically delist assets once issuers cease operations and on-chain contracts are deprecated. Step App has not published a detailed post-mortem or migration plan, and its team did not respond to requests for clarification on whether any core infrastructure, including staking contracts and in-app data, will remain accessible in read-only mode.
