Marex Bags a Seat at Digital Prime's Billion-Dollar Lending Buffet 🍽️
Marex Group, a Nasdaq-listed financial services firm, has acquired an undisclosed stake in Digital Prime Technologies, an institutional crypto infrastructure provider, the companies announced Wednesday. The investment marks Marex's latest move to expand its institutional digital assets business and adds the firm to a growing roster of traditional finance companies backing digital asset market infrastructure.
The capital will support continued development of Tokenet, a digital asset lending and borrowing platform built by Digital Prime in partnership with EquiLend. Digital Prime said last week that Tokenet had surpassed $1 billion in lending inventory and more than $1 billion in borrowing demand from its launch partners, figures the company defined as the amount of digital assets available to lend through the platform and the volume of borrowing interest expressed by participating institutions, rather than completed loans. Launch partners named by Digital Prime include Galaxy Digital and Ripple Prime, among others.
Marex's investment extends a wave of institutional capital flowing into specific segments of the crypto industry. Barclays, BNY and Wells Fargo have recently targeted areas ranging from stablecoin infrastructure to tokenized deposits, reflecting traditional finance's continued build-out of digital asset capabilities. Marex did not disclose the size of the investment or the stake acquired in Digital Prime.
The Tokenet platform operates as a marketplace where institutional participants can post digital assets available for lending and express interest in borrowing, with EquiLend contributing the underlying trading and post-trade technology developed through its existing relationships with securities lending clients. Digital Prime has positioned Tokenet as a bridge between conventional securities lending infrastructure and digital asset markets, aiming to standardize terms and operations across both.
The deal underscores how established financial intermediaries are using targeted investments rather than wholly owned builds to gain exposure to digital asset services. Marex, which reported results across its market-making, hedging, agency execution and commodities businesses, has identified digital assets as a growth priority within its broader institutional client offering.
