Cramer Unveils Quantum Exit Strategy, Bitcoin Holders Cheer the Head Start 🪙

CNBC host Jim Cramer said he is selling his Bitcoin, citing a timeline laid out by IBM CEO Arvind Krishna during a recent interview in which Krishna warned that quantum computers could threaten the cryptography protecting cryptocurrencies within three to four years. "I think that you should give yourself three or four years," Krishna replied when Cramer asked if he should be more careful, "and at that point, I would get rather paranoid about it." Cramer did not wait. "Arvind Krishna knows quantum incredibly. He knows Bitcoin and quantum. And I'm going to sell mine," he said, adding that Ethereum might be "even worse." A clip of the segment drew 89,000 views on X and over 9,000 views on YouTube after it was posted on August 3, 2026.

The announcement drew broadly positive reactions from crypto traders, who revived the "Inverse Cramer" trade, a long-running pattern in which bets against the CNBC host's recommendations have historically outperformed. "Every time Cramer says sell, I add to my position. Been doing it since 2018. The inverse Cramer index remains undefeated," wrote one account, Bitcoin & Barbells, on August 4, 2026. The pattern became so established that Tuttle Capital launched the Inverse Cramer Tracker ETF in 2023, alongside a Long Cramer fund. Both have closed; the long version shut down first, and the short version followed in February 2024 with $2 million in assets. "We started it in order to point out the danger of following TV stockpickers, Jim Cramer specifically, and the total lack of accountability," portfolio manager Matthew Tuttle said. "We feel like we have accomplished that mission."

Cramer's track record in crypto has been cited as a reason the meme has endured. In December 2022, with Bitcoin near $16,796, he said he had sold everything and would not touch crypto "in a million years." Bitcoin subsequently gained more than 400% over the following three years. He reversed course in January 2024, calling Bitcoin a "technological marvel" that is "here to stay." Bitcoin rose about 1.6% on the day he announced his latest decision to sell.

The quantum concerns Cramer cited follow a July 30 demonstration of verified quantum advantage by IBM and the University of Chicago, and come amid a broader wave of security incidents in crypto. AI was credited with a Coldcard exploit that has passed $100 million in losses, occurring after a string of DeFi hacks and exploits totaling well over $300 million. Zcash (ZEC) developers said they used frontier AI to identify exploit vectors in their own cryptography and subsequently patched them.
