Bybit Splits the Bill: Austrian EMI License Lets Payments and Crypto Sit at Separate Tables 🥂

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk1 min read

Bybit Payments GmbH has secured an Electronic Money Institution license from Austria's Financial Market Authority, expanding the exchange's regulated footprint across the European Union through the Bybit.eu platform. The approval authorizes the Austrian subsidiary to provide regulated electronic money and payment services, while crypto-asset activity remains housed under Bybit EU GmbH, which continues to operate under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework. Bybit said the two entities will remain legally separate but will run through the same platform to deliver a unified customer experience. The licensing path was highlighted as part of a broader plan to support future payment products aimed at European users. Georg Harer, Managing Director at Bybit EU GmbH and Bybit Payments GmbH, said, "Europe is setting the global benchmark for how digital assets and financial services can evolve," adding that the dual-entity structure is designed to meet regulatory expectations while preserving product continuity for customers. The development adds another compliance layer to Bybit's European operations as regulators across the EU continue tightening oversight of digital asset platforms under MiCA.
