Wells Fargo Goes On-Chain, Because Banks Now Sleep When You Let Them 💤

—By our Markets Desk1 min read

Wells Fargo has announced plans to roll out tokenized deposits that will enable corporate and commercial clients to move, program, and settle funds 24 hours a day within a regulated framework. The program is scheduled to launch this fall and will initially focus on a limited U.S. dollar (USD) to British pound (GBP) exchange, with an expansion planned through 2027 to additional clients, countries, and currencies.

According to the bank's press release, the tokenized deposit offering is designed to extend settlement capabilities beyond traditional market hours, bringing the institution's payment infrastructure onto blockchain rails. Wells Fargo Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo described the planned launch as an "important step forward," framing it as part of the bank's broader expansion of payment options that include on-chain solutions.

The initiative places Wells Fargo alongside other Wall Street firms, including JPMorgan and Citigroup, that have been building out tokenization services for institutional clients. The product is positioned for corporate and commercial treasury and payment use cases, with the initial USD/GBP corridor suggesting a cross-border payments focus in its first phase. Additional rollout milestones, including the onboarding of more counterparties and additional fiat currencies, are slated for 2027.
