Mastercard Closes $1.8B BVNK Deal, Stablecoins Get a Swipe-Right 💳

—By our DeFi Desk1 min read

Mastercard has completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure company BVNK, closing a transaction valued at up to $1.8 billion. The payments company announced on Monday that the deal combines its global network with BVNK's onchain infrastructure to connect digital currencies with fiat currencies across enterprise payment flows.

Mastercard said the combination is intended to help institutions, fintechs and companies expand their use of stablecoins and tokenized assets in cross-border business payments, payouts, settlement and treasury operations. In a separate statement, BVNK confirmed it has officially joined Mastercard, telling customers that teams, products and integrations remain unchanged and that no action is required on their end.

BVNK said the tie-up could enable banks to offer stablecoin payment services and connect customer accounts to wallets, while payment providers could support round-the-clock merchant settlement. The company added that Mastercard's global reach would extend its card capabilities and international fund transfer services.

The agreement, first announced in March, included up to $1.8 billion in consideration with $300 million tied to contingent payments. The completed acquisition follows the collapse of a proposed $2 billion transaction between Coinbase and BVNK in November 2025, which had reached the due diligence stage before being abandoned.
