Treasury's top crypto cop clocks out as CLARITY Act stays stuck in legislative limbo

Tyler Williams, the senior US Treasury official who served as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's top adviser on digital asset policy, has departed the department, according to a Monday Punchbowl News report. Bessent confirmed in a statement to Punchbowl that Williams' last day at Treasury was Friday, describing him as "instrumental" in advancing the Trump administration's goal of making the United States the "crypto capital of the world."

Williams joined the Treasury Department in early 2025 after serving as head of policy at Galaxy Digital. During his tenure he played a central role in shaping the administration's digital asset agenda and is now expected to return to the private sector, Punchbowl reported.

His exit lands in the middle of a legislative standoff over the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, a market structure bill that has stalled ahead of lawmakers' August recess. The bill, which requires 60 votes to advance in the Senate, has been held up by disputes over ethics provisions for federal officials, and bipartisan consensus has yet to materialize.

Analysts at Bernstein said Monday that additional delays to the legislation could weigh on digital asset prices by extending the period of regulatory uncertainty. The report offered no immediate indication of who will succeed Williams at Treasury or how the personnel change might affect the administration's digital asset strategy.
