Pump the Profit, Dump the Pump: Trump Tells Exxon & Chevron to Hand Back the Gas Bill ⛽

President Donald Trump publicly criticized ExxonMobil and Chevron this week after both energy majors reported quarterly earnings that surged alongside oil prices driven by the Iran war. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the two companies "are making too much money based on a shortage" and added, "I don't like it." He urged both firms to reduce retail consumer prices, stating, "Chevron, too much money. ExxonMobil, too much money. They're going to give some of that back to the public and they better cut the retail price, the consumer price."

The president's remarks came after U.S. crude oil recorded an average closing price near $92 during the second quarter, roughly 27% higher than the first quarter. Prices climbed as the Iran war disrupted energy markets and raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz after Iran threatened tankers and restricted oil flows through the key shipping route. Chevron reported second-quarter earnings of $12 billion, compared with $2.5 billion in the same period last year, marking a nearly 400% increase from the prior-year quarter. ExxonMobil's profits more than doubled to $14.5 billion as oil prices averaged near $92 in the quarter.

The jump in quarterly earnings placed both companies in direct contrast with Trump's stated priority of lower consumer fuel prices. Trump did not announce any specific policy or enforcement action against the firms, and the companies have not publicly responded to the president's comments at the time of writing. Oil futures and energy-sector equities have not been separately reported in this update, and the broader impact on gasoline prices at the pump remains subject to ongoing market conditions and refinery output.
