The Carry Trade Echo: How a 1998-Style Yen Defense Is Shaking Bitcoin's 2026 🪙
Bitcoin traded near $62,500 on Tuesday as analysts pointed to a recurring correlation between the largest corrections of 2026 and Japan's defense of the yen, a currency intervention pattern that drew official confirmation from both Tokyo and Washington for the first time in nearly three decades. A popular analyst known as Crypto Rover published a chart overlaying BTC/USDT against the USD/JPY pair, marking intervention moments with red circles that align with each major decline. Between late January and mid-February, Bitcoin fell 35.43% alongside a notable move in the currency pair. From late April through June 10, the asset corrected by 26.28%, including an intermediate 9.34% drop. The most recent case closed the pattern as Bitcoin faced renewed bearish pressure in late July while the yen approached a 40-year low near 164 per dollar.
Context arrived days later when both governments officially confirmed a coordinated yen-buying intervention executed the previous Friday. The scale was substantial, with Japan reportedly spending around $59 billion on recent interventions according to Bank of Japan data, and the Bank of Japan alone spent nearly $32 billion during the previous week. This marked the first joint yen purchase between Tokyo and Washington since 1998.
The bearish case has prominent backers. Ted Pillows posted on August 2 that $50,000 could materialize if the CLARITY Act fails and the carry trade unwinds, stating "$50,000 could happen if the Clarity Act doesn't pass and the yen carry trade unwind starts." The yen carry trade involves borrowing the Japanese currency cheaply to invest in higher-yielding assets, including cryptocurrencies, and a sharp strengthening of the yen forces investors to close those positions.
Not every prominent voice shares that pessimism, with Michaël van de Poppe calling the yen chart the most important one to monitor. He argued the logic inverts if the dollar keeps falling while the yen strengthens, since both governments have now partnered up to strengthen the currency. The coordinated intervention, the CLARITY Act timeline, and the Bank of Japan's reported spending totals remain the central reference points cited by market participants tracking $BTC direction.
