Bitcoin's July Glow-Up Survives Rate Hikes, Hackers and Existential Dread 🪨

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin is set to close July with a roughly 7.5% monthly gain despite a wave of macroeconomic and security headwinds that tested investor conviction across digital asset markets. The largest cryptocurrency slipped below $63,000 on Friday, down about 3% on the day, with $BTC last changing hands at $62,971.31. Even so, the asset held above its bear market lows and outperformed equities during a stretch that featured rising rate-hike expectations, climbing bond yields and a sharp unwind of the AI trade.

Analysts at Bitfinex attribute much of that resilience to positioning. Crypto derivatives traders were largely flushed out during the late-June selloff that pushed $BTC below $58,000 on July 1, leaving the market with far less leverage than equities entering the recent volatility. Average daily liquidations have since stayed well below the year's typical $400 million to $500 million range, indicating little forced selling despite macro shocks. "Crypto fell less than levered equity themes because the forced-selling fuel was already spent," the analysts wrote.

Security concerns have also resurfaced after a major exploit involving Coldcard, one of bitcoin's best-known hardware wallets, resulted in at least $38 million worth of bitcoin being stolen. The incident has not materially affected price action but contributed to renewed debate around self-custody risks as digital-asset exploits accelerate.

Attention now turns to upcoming U.S. jobs data and the Federal Reserve's policy path, which traders are watching for confirmation that spot bitcoin ETF inflows will resume. With positioning reset and leveraged longs largely cleared, market participants are bracing for what several analysts described as a potentially "choppy" August as macro catalysts take center stage.
