Q2 Reality Check: Coinbase Heads Into Earnings Wall Street Already Discounted 📉
Coinbase (COIN) is scheduled to report second-quarter results on Thursday after the close, with Wall Street analysts signaling that softer crypto trading activity will weigh on the headline numbers. Spot trading volumes across the industry fell sharply in April and May, and bitcoin ($BTC $63,847.75) and ether (ETH) both traded lower on average than in the prior quarter while retail participation remained muted. Crypto markets stayed under pressure through most of the period, with bitcoin losing roughly 14% and ether about 25%, before a partial recovery in June that most analysts described as insufficient to offset the earlier weakness.
Barclays, Benchmark, Clear Street and Compass Point each trimmed their estimates ahead of the print, citing reduced spot trading activity as the main driver. Barclays analyst Benjamin Budish estimates Coinbase processed roughly $152 billion of trading volume during the quarter, below the Street's expected $178 billion, and projects adjusted EBITDA to come in roughly 3% below consensus due to weaker blockchain rewards and institutional trading revenue. Clear Street's Owen Lau reduced his figures to approximately $160 billion in trading volume and $301 million in adjusted EBITDA after weaker-than-expected retail activity, while Benchmark's Mark Palmer cut his EBITDA forecast to $377 million. Compass Point expects revenue to slightly miss consensus but believes EBITDA will be roughly in line with expectations.
Coinbase executives have pointed to steady subscription and services income, including stablecoin interest and staking rewards, as a partial cushion against the trading decline. Investors are also weighing newer growth initiatives such as prediction markets and derivatives, alongside any updates to the ongoing push for U.S. crypto legislation on Capitol Hill, which analysts say remains the most consequential variable for the second half of the year.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has framed the broader strategy around expanding the company's product set beyond transactions and deepening its institutional offering, though specific Q2 commentary from management will not arrive until the post-market call.
