Binance US Bets Its Bottom DCM on the Prediction Markets Boom 🎯

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk2 min read

Binance US is preparing to file an application with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for a Designated Contract Market license, a step that would allow the exchange to operate regulated prediction markets alongside its existing spot crypto trading business. The plan, reported by CoinGape, signals the platform's latest effort to diversify its US product lineup after a period of regulatory pressure and reduced market share.

The exchange intends to move beyond spot crypto trading by offering event-based contracts under CFTC oversight. A Designated Contract Market designation would subject the new products to the same trade-monitoring, reporting and compliance standards applied to other CFTC-regulated futures venues in the United States. Binance US has not publicly disclosed a filing date or a launch timeline for the new products.

Prediction markets, which allow users to take positions on the outcomes of events ranging from economic data releases to political results, have drawn growing trading volumes over the past year. Platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket have reported increased engagement even as federal regulators have continued to examine how event contracts fit within existing derivatives and gaming laws. The sector's expansion has drawn the attention of larger exchanges seeking regulated pathways into the market.

Binance US has separately continued to operate under the oversight of multiple US regulators, including settlements reached with the Department of Justice, FinCEN and the Treasury Department's OFSDC in 2023, alongside ongoing monitoring by the court-appointed independent compliance consultant. The exchange's parent, Binance Holdings, has maintained compliance and monitoring obligations tied to its own 2023 settlement with US authorities.

CoinGape's report did not include a direct quote from Binance US or the CFTC regarding the planned application. The exchange has not announced a formal press release on the matter, and the CFTC routinely declines to comment on pending license requests until a determination is made. Should the application be filed and approved, Binance US would join a small group of DCM-licensed venues offering event-contract trading to US-based customers.
