Fed Holds Rates at 3.50%–3.75% for Fifth Straight Meeting, Dissents Pile Up 🏦

The U.S. Federal Reserve held its target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75% on Wednesday, marking the fifth consecutive FOMC meeting without a rate change, in a decision that aligned with market expectations despite earlier speculation of a surprise hike. The Committee voted 9 to 3 in favor of holding rates steady, with Fed presidents Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan dissenting in favor of a rate increase. The meeting was Kevin Warsh's second as Fed Chair following his appointment by President Trump to succeed Jerome Powell.

The accompanying statement struck a hawkish tone on inflation, a posture analysts have increasingly associated with Warsh's tenure. Michael Reynolds, Vice President of Investment Strategy at Glenden, noted the policy continuity, stating, "There is a significant degree of continuity between the two chairmen." Trump, who had publicly criticized Powell and threatened to remove him over the pace of rate cuts, has not repeated those attacks on Warsh.

Following the decision, $BTC posted an initial reaction that traders monitored closely as attention turned to Warsh's press conference, scheduled for 9:00 PM (2:30 PM ET). Earlier in the session, market expectations had tilted toward at least one Fed rate hike by year-end, while forecasts of rate cuts during Warsh's term as Fed Chair had also circulated in prior reporting.

The Fed's persistent inflation concerns and the three dissenting votes reinforced the view that the Committee remains split on the path forward. Warsh, like Powell before him, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of controlling inflation, and some investors believe he has taken a tougher stance than expected since taking office. The next signals from the press conference and subsequent FOMC communications are likely to shape rate-path expectations heading into the remainder of the year.
