Core Scientific Pivots From Hash to Hype, Hands AMD 2.5 GW of Data Center Muscle 🤖
Core Scientific has signed a multi-year agreement with chipmaker AMD to lease up to 2.5 gigawatts of data center capacity beginning in 2027, marking one of the largest disclosed infrastructure commitments tied to the former Bitcoin mining operator's transition into artificial intelligence hosting. The arrangement was disclosed in a joint press release by Core Scientific and AMD and centers on physical infrastructure design along with the deployment of AMD Instinct™ GPUs, EPYC™ CPUs, and ROCm™ software for end customer workloads.
Under the terms, AMD will gain access to capacity across Core Scientific's sites, and both companies will collaborate on site planning and energy provisioning for AI deployments. AMD will also receive market-priced warrants to purchase Core Scientific common stock, tying the chipmaker's potential upside to the miner's retooled business. Core Scientific (CORZ) shares rose more than 5% following the announcement of the deal.
The agreement is the clearest signal yet of Core Scientific's strategic shift away from $BTC mining toward building and operating high-density AI data centers, a pivot the company accelerated earlier this year when it sold roughly 1,900 BTC to bolster liquidity and fund infrastructure upgrades. The miner has since repositioned its power contracts, real estate, and operational footprint as a platform for AI cloud customers rather than proof-of-work fleets.
For AMD, the deal secures a long-dated pipeline of domestic capacity at a moment when hyperscaler demand for accelerators has repeatedly outstripped available power and shell space. Core Scientific did not disclose the contract's dollar value, the warrant strike price, or the geographic distribution of the 2.5 gigawatts, and an AMD spokesperson declined to add details beyond the joint release. The companies said additional financial terms and site selections will be communicated as deployment milestones are finalized.
