Lido Tells 265K Validators to Slim Down: Ethereum's Beacon Chain Is Going on a Diet 🪶
Lido, the liquid staking protocol behind the stETH token, has rolled out a major infrastructure upgrade designed to cut Ethereum's validator count by roughly one-third while reshaping how its node operators are held accountable. The release, branded as Core 2026 and headlined by the new Curated Module v2, was confirmed by the project on Monday and operates entirely at the protocol level, requiring no action from stETH holders.
At the heart of the change is native support for Ethereum's 0x02 withdrawal credentials. Validators using the new credentials can raise their effective balance from 32 ETH up to 2,048 ETH, a structure introduced by the Pectra hard fork through EIP-7251. Lido said the migration could shrink Ethereum's validator set from about 880,000 to roughly 628,000, a reduction of roughly 29% in attestation messages per epoch. The Curated Module currently secures around 90% of all ETH staked through Lido Core, and more than 265,000 of its existing validators are slated to migrate from legacy 0x01 credentials via consolidation. As a result, the share of ETH secured by compounding validators inside the module is projected to climb from 32.06% to 52.21%.
The consolidation is expected to affect Ethereum's consensus layer by lowering the number of validators and validator messages needed to maintain the network, reducing networking and processing load for all operators. Lido stated the change is not designed to alter execution-layer activity, which determines transaction fees and gas costs. The upgrade also introduces new accountability measures for node operators, including ETH-backed bonding and penalty mechanisms, with future stake distribution expected to weight operator performance, fees and contributions to Ethereum's ecosystem more heavily.
"Curated Module v2 is the next major step in that evolution," Lido said, adding that the release brings new operator incentives, bond-based security mechanisms and governance improvements. No start date for the migration has been announced, and the projected validator figures are based on Lido's internal modeling. Lido Dao (LDO) traded at $0.39, up 1.35% over 24 hours at the time of reporting.
