PayPal Logs $81M Crypto Paper Chase, Still Posts $8.68B Quarter 🧾

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

PayPal reported second-quarter revenue of $8.68 billion, up from $8.29 billion a year earlier and above the $8.47 billion analyst consensus. Earnings came in at $1.26 per share, compared with $1.30 per share in the same period last year and below the $1.28 analyst estimate. The company disclosed an $81 million non-GAAP adjustment tied to gains and losses from strategic investments and crypto assets held for investment. PayPal said it excludes those gains and losses from non-GAAP results because it does not actively trade the assets or rely on them to fund ongoing operations.

In its Q2 investor presentation, PayPal said it is expanding into agentic payments, stablecoins, identity and biometric technologies by leveraging its payments network, risk infrastructure and trust capabilities. The company said its PayPal World platform facilitated about $200 million in total payment volume between Venmo and PayPal. Stablecoins were named alongside AI-driven payment tools as part of the company's forward strategy during the quarter.

The earnings filing, released Tuesday, treated crypto assets as a reconciliation item between GAAP and non-GAAP measures rather than a core operating driver. PayPal did not provide a breakdown of which digital assets comprised the $81 million adjustment or specify the period-over-period change. The company also did not announce a new stablecoin product in the release, framing its existing stablecoin work as part of the broader push into agentic commerce.

The results come as major payments firms continue to integrate blockchain-based settlement tools into legacy rails. PayPal previously launched its own dollar-pegged stablecoin, PYUSD, and has tied stablecoin functionality to Venmo and Xoom transfers. Tuesday's filing signals that the company views stablecoins and AI-driven payment agents as adjacent growth areas alongside its core checkout and money-movement services.
