Bitfinex spies $68,500 break-even wall standing between $BTC and an "air pocket" to $84K

Bitcoin recovered from its Asian session lows on Wednesday, trading steady as Nasdaq futures remained under pressure ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision. The rebound drew fresh scrutiny from analysts at crypto exchange Bitfinex, who identified the short-term holder cost basis near $68,500 as the key technical hurdle for the market's next move.

The $68,500 level represents the aggregate break-even price for coins held by investors for less than 155 days, a cohort tracked closely by on-chain analysts. According to Bitfinex researchers, the figure carries particular weight because it marks the first major resistance band capable of shaping Bitcoin's mid-timeframe trend. They warned that price action approaching this threshold could trigger a wave of profit-taking as holders look to exit at parity.

"There is significant structural resistance at the $68,500 level, and as prices rise toward break-even, many investors will likely sell to exit at parity," the analysts said in an emailed note. Should Bitcoin clear that barrier, volume analysis points to an "air pocket" before the next major resistance at $84,000, a pattern the team compared to the rapid price expansion seen during the mid-May move from $67,000 to more than $80,000.

Attention now turns to the Fed rate decision scheduled for Wednesday, with market participants weighing the policy outlook against the technical setup outlined by Bitfinex. The short-term holder cost basis remains the level to watch as Bitcoin navigates a session shaped by both macro catalysts and on-chain supply dynamics.
