X Marks the Wallet: Musk's "This Is Money" Dream Finally Has a Spending Tab

By our Markets Desk2 min read

X Money has begun rolling out to Premium and Premium+ subscribers in the United States, advancing Elon Musk's long-stated plan to convert the platform into an "everything app" with built-in financial services. Musk marked the launch with a post on X reading, "This is money."

The product, available through the X platform, offers free and instant peer-to-peer transfers, wires, checks, and support for a Visa-linked X Card. Account holders can earn up to 6% APY and receive 3% cashback on eligible X Card purchases. Access is currently limited to paying X subscribers in the U.S., with broader availability tied to subsequent rollout phases.

Banking infrastructure for X Money is provided by Cross River Bank, the New Jersey-based state-chartered lender that has served as Ripple's banking partner since 2015. The integration positions X Money within a federally regulated framework, routing funds through an institution with established ties to blockchain-sector clients.

The launch adds a payments layer to X's core social product, placing it in direct competition with established peer-to-peer platforms such as Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle. Musk purchased the platform, then known as Twitter, in October 2022 and has since rebranded it under the X name, floated recurring revenue plans, and pushed for the integration of messaging, video, and commerce on top of the social feed.

X Money arrives amid a broader push by social media and messaging companies to embed financial services directly into their interfaces. By tying payments to an existing subscriber base and a federally chartered bank partner, X has cleared one of the principal regulatory and operational hurdles that have historically blocked social platforms from offering money movement at scale.
