Quantum canary: why $BTC may croak before your bank gets pwned 🪙💀

Crypto networks, not Wall Street, will likely be the first systems cracked when quantum computers become powerful enough to break modern encryption, according to Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange. "Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Zervigon said in an interview with CoinDesk, pointing to the decentralized structure of blockchain networks as the reason attackers will target them first. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer," he added.

The timeline for that scenario is compressing. Firms including Microsoft and IBM have suggested a commercially relevant, cryptographically relevant quantum computer could arrive in the 2029 timeframe, Zervigon said, citing public statements from IBM's Arvind Krishna. Earlier this year, Google researchers reported that breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography securing top cryptocurrencies such as $BTC and $ETH would require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, a roughly 20-fold reduction from prior estimates, prompting some observers, including Google, to move the so-called Q-Day forecast up to 2029.

The cryptographic gap that quantum machines would target is not unique to digital assets. The same elliptic-curve schemes underpin signature security across major financial infrastructure, and banks face the same theoretical exposure. But governance, not mathematics, is the binding constraint, Zervigon argued. Bitcoin's consensus-driven upgrade process moves more slowly than the patch cycles available to centralized institutions, meaning a quantum-capable adversary could find the easiest entry point on a public blockchain before corporate IT teams have finished their change-management reviews.

Zervigon also pushed back on the idea of Q-Day as a single event, describing it instead as a rolling threat window in which attackers only need enough quantum power to begin compromising encryption before affected assets lose value. Quantum Xchange builds infrastructure intended to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, positioning the firm in a market that is drawing attention as governments and hyperscalers accelerate their roadmaps. The White House has separately set a goal of developing a powerful quantum computer by 2029.
