Three Central Banks, Three Holds, and One Hopeful Quarter-Point: Crypto Braces for a Macro Burn 🔥
Crypto markets enter the week of July 27 staring down a trio of central bank decisions, with the Federal Reserve, Bank of England and Bank of Japan all expected to keep benchmark rates unchanged while traders parse incoming data for clues on whether higher energy prices have pushed future tightening closer. CME's FedWatch puts the odds of a U.S. rate increase at 33%, while prediction markets show 19%, up from negligible levels earlier this month. EY-Parthenon chief economist Gregory Daco told CBS News that September could be the first meaningful test of the Fed's stance.
The Federal Reserve's rate decision is scheduled for July 29 at 2:00 p.m. ET, with the estimate and previous rate both at 3.75%, followed at 2:30 p.m. by the Fed press conference on the FOMC monetary policy decision, interest-rate trajectory and economic outlook. All 70 economists in a Reuters poll expect the Bank of England to hold at 3.75%, and the Bank of Japan is forecast to remain at 1% before potentially raising rates again later this year. Thursday brings the immediate tests, with U.S. second-quarter GDP and June Personal Consumption Expenditure price index releases due; stronger growth paired with persistent inflation would reinforce higher-for-longer expectations and pressure crypto through higher yields and a stronger dollar.
Beyond macro, the week is stacked with crypto-specific events. The CFTC's comment window on extending listed-derivatives trading to 24/7 and allowing perpetual contracts for physically delivered or storable commodities closes July 27, Polygon's Ithaca hard fork upgrade is set for mainnet on July 29, and BitMEX will settle and delist 35 derivatives contracts on July 30 as the exchange proceeds with its wind-down. The FTX Recovery Trust's fifth distribution to creditors is scheduled to begin July 31, totaling roughly $900 million.
Corporate earnings will provide a read on retail engagement and digital-asset treasury operations, with reports due from Robinhood (HOOD), Coinbase (COIN) and Strategy (MSTR). Additional data points include U.S. Durable Goods Orders MoM for June on July 27 at 8:30 a.m. ET (previous -4.5%), Australia CPI YoY for June on July 28 at 9:30 p.m. ET (previous 4.1%) alongside the RBA Trimmed Mean CPI YoY (previous 3.6%), and the Eurozone release on July 30 at 5:00 a.m.
