Coinbase CEO Nixes "Pivot to AI" Mantra, Says Crypto Is the Power Strip 🤖⚡
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong dismissed calls for crypto firms to "pivot to AI," labeling the advice "zero sum, scarcity thinking" in a tweet on July 26, 2026. Crypto functions as a general-purpose technology, he argued—"infrastructure, the same way electricity or the internet is"—that does not compete with the next major trend "because it underpins it." The artificial intelligence "megatrend," Armstrong said, does not diminish crypto and instead "makes crypto more important."
Armstrong framed AI and crypto as complementary layers rather than competing priorities, with AI providing the intelligence and crypto supplying the money rails. He centered his case on AI agents, which he said will require "their own financial infrastructure" and will eventually transact "far more per day than all humans combined." Unlike people, an agent cannot open a bank account, wait three days for a wire, or reside in a single country, so it will need "real time programmable money," in the form of crypto, to hold funds and pay for things on its own.
The CEO outlined a future in which agents trade, serve as financial advisors, and raise or borrow money for their own projects, while taking over human tasks such as tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill pay. Coinbase has moved into the "AiFi" category through its contributions to the x402 protocol and its Base blockchain, while its USDC stablecoin already powers "the vast majority" of agentic payments, Armstrong said.
The pitch follows Coinbase's earlier operational shift toward AI. In a company-wide email, Armstrong announced layoffs affecting approximately 14% of the exchange's workforce, citing a crypto market downturn and a broader reorganization. "We are not just reducing headcount and cutting costs — we're fundamentally changing how we operate: rebuilding Coinbase as an intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it," Armstrong wrote. He later tweeted the email and described the moment as an "inflection point," positioning Coinbase as "lean, fast, and AI-native," with "AI at our core."
Armstrong's remarks arrive as Bitcoin miners and digital asset treasury firms redirect resources toward AI infrastructure, with investment firms prioritizing the emerging technology. Coinbase's strategy now pairs that internal AI rebuild with continued development of the crypto rails intended to support autonomous agent transactions.
