Brazilian feds seize 13 detention warrants, 44 search ops in cartel probe that laundered billions through crypto brokers

Brazilian Federal Police arrested nine people and executed 13 pretrial detention warrants along with 44 search-and-seizure warrants across São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina and Espírito Santo as part of a transnational investigation into an alleged international drug cartel, the agency said in a July 23 announcement. Authorities estimate the organization trafficked around 6.5 metric tons of cocaine and laundered billions of reals in proceeds using methods that included shell companies, crypto-enabled illicit money brokers, luxury assets and real estate. Federal and state law enforcement carried out the operation last week.

The suspects face charges including participation in a transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking and money laundering. According to the Federal Police, the group is suspected of moving billions in Brazilian reals through various asset-concealment methods, with crypto-linked brokers among the channels used to obscure the origin of the funds. No cryptocurrency tickers or on-chain transaction values were disclosed by Brazilian authorities in the announcement.

The Brazilian operation follows the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioning six $ETH addresses tied to a Sinaloa Cartel-linked money laundering network in May. OFAC said the network allegedly converted drug proceeds into cryptocurrency as part of its cross-border financial activity. Brazilian and U.S. authorities have separately targeted digital-asset channels used for narcotics-related money movement, though the two enforcement actions are not officially linked in the public record.

The Federal Police did not name the nine individuals arrested or specify which crypto broker services were allegedly used in the money laundering chain. Investigators said asset seizures and additional forensic financial work are continuing as the case moves into prosecution.
