Warsh's "Family Feud" Episode Hits Wednesday's FOMC — Hawkish Dissents on the Buzzer 🪶

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's months-long prediction of an FOMC "family fight" could materialize at Wednesday's policy meeting, with economists projecting at least two hawkish dissents on the interest-rate decision. Warsh has used the phrase 13 times since his April nomination hearing, according to a CNBC tally, and his first meeting as chair last month ended in a unanimous hold.

Wall Street is positioning for a contested vote. JPMorgan's Michael Feroli identified Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan as likely dissenters, and TD Securities' Oscar Munoz said "the July FOMC will be a family feud… just as Kevin Warsh intended." Traders have already begun repricing the path of rates, with CME Group's FedWatch tool showing 34.2% odds of a quarter-point hike, up from 12.8% a week earlier.

Inflation pressures from both energy and semiconductors are sharpening the internal divide. A collapsed U.S.-Iran ceasefire pushed Brent crude back above $100 a barrel before a subsequent pause in hostilities pulled prices down, while AI-driven chip shortages continue to lift consumer electronics prices as hyperscalers maintain heavy AI infrastructure spending. Fed Governor Chris Waller has argued the central bank cannot simply wait for inflation to fade, a position that echoes Warsh's recent criticism of the Fed's inflation framework, and Hammack has warned that patience is running out across the economy. "For the first time in my tenure, I'm hearing from businesses who say they think we need to take action to curb inflation, and from consumers who can'T make ends meet about a growing sense of despair," Hammack said.

A softer June inflation print still favors a hold, and the vote comes as U.S. midterm elections approach, adding political weight to the deliberations. Two hawkish dissents would turn Warsh's repeated forecast into the real internal confrontation he has been signaling since taking the chair.
