Shiba Inu fetches a 36% pump, Korean traders quietly walk it three times around the block 🐕
Shiba Inu rose 36% to about $0.0000057 on Sunday, adding roughly $1 billion to its market capitalization in a single day without any announcement, protocol upgrade or listing to account for the move. The token's market cap now sits near $3.4 billion on almost $380 million of daily trading volume, its highest turnover ranking in months, with SHIB prices up 35% over the past 24 hours.
No catalyst has emerged from Shibarium, the project's layer-2 network, and the broader dog-token complex has not kept pace. Dogecoin $DOGE gained 6% over the same stretch, while smaller-cap dog-themed tokens moved as much as 10%, a divergence that points to activity specific to SHIB rather than a rotation across memecoins. The token launched in August 2020 as an Ethereum-based ERC-20 created by an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi, pitched openly as a "Dogecoin killer" with no product behind it, and it has since built out Shibarium and a broader token ecosystem, though SHIB remains far below its 2021 high and trades primarily on retail sentiment.
South Korean buying stands out as the principal driver. Upbit's SHIB/KRW pair is the single largest market at about $62 million, more than a tenth of global volume, and it prints a slight premium to Binance and other dollar venues. On-chain and order-book trackers show the price action followed a familiar pattern: a first push late Saturday, nine flat hours, then a second leg through the Asian morning, consistent with prior high-volatility rallies driven by Korean retail flow.
Short sellers paid for the leg higher. About $6 million in SHIB and 1000SHIB positions were liquidated across roughly 2,300 traders, with some $5 million of that on the short side, and the heaviest hour of liquidations landed squarely on the second move. The cascade followed the price up rather than causing it, and at that scale it cannot explain a move of this size.
SHIB retains a market capitalization of roughly $3.4 billion and continues to rank among the most-traded memecoins by turnover, with Upbit's KRW pair and Korean trader activity remaining the most visible feature of the tape in the hours after the rally.
