Even Jake Claver Can't Burn the 32B XRP Escrow — and Neither Can Ripple 🔥

Ripple cannot unilaterally burn the roughly 32 billion XRP sitting in escrow, according to Digital Ascension Group Chairman Jake Claver, who pushed back on revived speculation circulating on X. XRPScan data shows that about 32.45 billion XRP is currently locked in escrow, while approximately 67.53 billion XRP is in circulation, against a hard-coded total supply of 100 billion XRP on the XRP Ledger. Roughly 1.44 million XRP has been permanently burned through transaction fees, leaving about 99.99 billion XRP as the maximum that could ever be burned, of which Ripple is reported to hold around 32%.

Claver framed the issue around validator governance rather than corporate intent. "Will Ripple just burn the escrow? They can't," he wrote, pointing out that Ripple operates three out of 35 trusted validators on the XRP Ledger and that any protocol change, including a token burn, would require roughly 80% validator consensus. He added that, as a result, "they can lock XRP in escrow, but torching supply takes 28 other independent validators voting."

The discussion lands the same week the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Ripple filed a joint stipulation to dismiss their appeals in the long-running litigation over XRP sales, with a status report scheduled. Claver's comments treat the escrow question as a governance and technical matter, not a policy decision the San Francisco-founded company can make on its own.

Taken together, the on-chain figures and the validator math show that the circulating supply of $XRP and the amount held in escrow are constrained by the protocol's consensus rules, not by any single entity. Claver's short exchange with the X community has been framed by industry commentators as a factual rebuttal to fears that Ripple's locked stake could be destroyed in a single move, reinforcing the role of the broader validator set in any future change to the ledger's token mechanics.
