Five Million Quid, Zero Declarations: Farage's Crypto Donor Just Made UK Political History

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage received an undeclared £5 million personal gift from cryptocurrency stakeholder Christopher Harborne ahead of the 2024 general election, making Harborne the largest single donor in UK political history, according to CryptoNews reporting. Both the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and the Electoral Commission have opened formal investigations into the donation, which was made before Farage entered Parliament and was not declared as required under Rule 5 of the MPs' Code of Conduct.

Harborne, a stakeholder in Tether and Bitfinex, has directed roughly £30 million into British politics in total, including the £5 million gift and more than £25 million donated directly to Reform UK and its predecessor parties since 2019, according to Al Jazeera. Those donations account for roughly two-thirds of all funding Reform UK has received since its founding.

Farage has described the £5 million as an unconditional, non-political personal gift, needed, he says, to fund lifetime security, and denies any case to answer. When questioned by BBC Breakfast on June 23, 2026 about how much of the money had been spent, Farage said, "I've done nothing wrong." He resigned his parliamentary seat on July 7, 2026, framing the resulting Clacton by-election as himself against "the establishment."

Separately, a referral has accused Farage of using his parliamentary platform to lobby against a digital pound, or Britcoin, that would compete directly with stablecoins such as Tether. In a September 2025 meeting with Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, Farage pushed back against plans for a retail CBDC. The Bank of England confirmed to Al Jazeera that no final decision on the digital pound has been taken.

The investigations into Harborne and Farage come amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of the UK crypto sector. Tether and Bitfinex have faced ongoing questions from global regulators over reserve backing and compliance practices, though neither has been charged with wrongdoing in connection with the UK political donations.
