Alphabet's $94B SpaceX Bet Lands on the Balance Sheet Like a Rocket 🚀

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Alphabet has disclosed a $94 billion stake in Elon Musk's SpaceX through its second-quarter 10-Q filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, marking the first valuation of the holding since the aerospace company went public on June 12. The bulk of the position, roughly $80 billion in shares, is classified under short-term restrictions, while about $14.1 billion is locked up for the long term, with release tied to the third quarter of 2027. The filing offers the clearest picture yet of Alphabet's exposure to SpaceX after years of partial disclosures tied to funding rounds.

The relationship began in January 2015, when Alphabet paired with Fidelity to invest $1 billion into SpaceX, with Google contributing an estimated $500 million to $900 million at a valuation of about $12 billion. The deal gave Google an initial 7.5% stake in the private space company, tied to plans to help fund a satellite internet network that later became Starlink. SpaceX went on to raise multiple rounds over the following decade, expanding both the Starlink constellation and the Starship program.

The latest filing shows how that early bet has compounded alongside SpaceX's growth in launches, satellite deployment, and broader commercial activity. Alphabet's cumulative investment, once a modest line item in a private-market portfolio, now ranks among the largest single equity exposures recorded by a U.S. tech giant, reflecting both the scale of SpaceX's valuation and the multi-year lockups still attached to insider and early-back holdings.

The disclosure arrives as SpaceX continues to operate as a public company, giving investors a transparent reference point for the valuation of legacy private stakes that were previously marked only at cost. Alphabet's filing makes clear that the $94 billion value is paper-based at the moment, with $14.1 billion restricted until Q3 2027 and the remainder subject to its own short-term lockup arrangements.
