Nine Heavy Hitters Form Bitcoin Security Consortium, Pledge $15M to Outpace the Quantum Quiz ðŸ§
Strategy and eight other financial and Bitcoin infrastructure firms have launched the Bitcoin Security Consortium, a group pledging an aggregate $15 million over three years to support developers working on the long-term security of the Bitcoin network, with a particular focus on post-quantum cryptography. The consortium was announced in a Thursday press release from Strategy, Michael Saylor's Bitcoin treasury firm.
Founding members include Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets and Galaxy Digital. The group is described as a cross-section of the institutional BTC ecosystem and will coordinate day-to-day operations through Mike Schmidt, who serves in a volunteer capacity. Schmidt is also the executive director of Brink, a non-profit that funds Bitcoin open-source developers.
The funding push comes as Bitcoin's quantum preparedness draws increasing attention across the industry. On Wednesday, Galaxy Digital pledged up to $5 million in grants for developers working on Bitcoin's quantum security and elected a council of quantum-advisory experts to research quantum-resistant migration solutions. The timeline for any quantum threat to $BTC remains contested.
In November 2025, Blockstream CEO Adam Back said Bitcoin faces no meaningful quantum threat for at least the next 20 to 40 years. In contrast, an April report from investment manager Bernstein said Bitcoin has about three to five years to prepare for a post-quantum security upgrade. BlackRock's global head of digital assets, Robert Mitchnick, said Bitcoin core developers do "incredibly important work" and that the asset manager was pleased to make "significant additional funding available to support Bitcoin's long-term security needs."
