White House Catches Moonshot AI Allegedly Sipping Anthropic's Fable Through a Straw 🧃

The White House has accused Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI of secretly using Anthropic's technology to build its K3 model, according to a post on X by Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Kratsios wrote that the U.S. government holds evidence that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable model during the development of K3.

Beyond the alleged direct use of Fable, Kratsios claimed Moonshot AI built what he described as a "sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models," designed to rotate between access methods to evade detection. "We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable for the development of its K3 model," Kratsios wrote. "To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of" detection, the post continued.

The allegation lands amid an intensifying technology rivalry between the United States and China, where AI progress has become a focal point of trade and national security discussions. Model distillation, a technique in which a smaller system is trained to replicate the outputs of a larger one, has drawn increasing scrutiny from policymakers concerned about intellectual property and export controls.

Neither Moonshot AI nor Anthropic had issued a public response at the time of publication. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy did not immediately provide further detail on the evidence cited in Kratsios's post.
