OpenAI Hires Itself a Lawyer: $1T IPO Rumors Meet Willkie Farr AI Deal 🤖⚖️

By our Markets Desk2 min read

OpenAI has signed its largest legal-industry partnership in recent months, agreeing with law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher to co-develop AI tools tailored for legal work, according to a Bloomberg report. The collaboration is intended to combine Willkie's legal expertise with OpenAI's technology to build products designed for tasks such as legal research, drafting and internal knowledge management.

Jason Boehmig, OpenAI's legal products leader and founder of legal technology firm Ironclad, described the project as the most advanced legal AI initiative the company is working on. Boehmig joined OpenAI earlier this year to lead efforts to bring lawyer-specific products to market. Willkie's participation places it among a growing cluster of top-tier firms adapting to AI-driven legal workflows.

The agreement comes amid broader reports that OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has discussed a potential initial public offering that could value the company near $1 trillion, though no offering has been confirmed. The legal AI push and any prospective listing both reflect OpenAI's effort to expand from general-purpose AI tools into specialized professional services as enterprise demand grows.

Law firms have increasingly turned to AI systems to accelerate research, drafting and internal operations, and the OpenAI-Willkie collaboration marks another step in that adoption. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed, and neither OpenAI nor Willkie Farr & Gallagher commented further on the deal beyond the reported details.
