🚪 S&P's New Crypto Index Just Showed Bitcoin the Door — And XRP Got the Same Treatment

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a new crypto benchmark designed to give institutional investors a structured approach to digital asset allocation — and notably, it does not include Bitcoin ($BTC) or XRP.

The index's top five constituents are Ethereum ($ETH), BNB ($BNB), Solana ($SOL), TRON ($TRX), and Hyperliquid ($HYPE). WhiteBIT Token, Unus Sed Leo, and Rain Protocol were also excluded from the lineup. The methodology document outlines the criteria for inclusion, including specific thresholds for price, market capitalization, liquidity, custody availability, and revenue generation.

Explaining the rationale, S&P Dow Jones Indices CEO Kathy Clay cited non-revenue generation as a key reason for excluding $BTC and XRP from the benchmark. The index applies quantitative filters designed to screen assets based on measurable financial characteristics rather than market position.

The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index is positioned as a benchmark for institutional investors seeking disciplined exposure to the digital asset market. According to the companies involved, the methodology is intended to evolve alongside the broader crypto sector as new assets meet the inclusion criteria.

The launch adds another data point for market participants tracking how traditional finance index providers approach digital assets, with the exclusion of the two largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization drawing particular attention from analysts and traders.
