TradFi Finally Learns Crypto Hours: LSE Goes 24/7 by 2027 🕯️
The London Stock Exchange Group will launch a dedicated overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027, marking a formal shift by the 300-year-old British exchange toward round-the-clock markets long dominated by crypto platforms. The LSE said on July 21 the new exchange will operate separately from its main venue and will initially offer access to exchange-traded products such as funds tracking the UK or US stock market.
The proposed overnight session will create a separate market window, allowing investors to trade after normal daytime hours. LSEG framed the move as a response to intensifying competition from crypto firms and other alternative trading venues that have rolled out 24/7 stock, ETF and tokenized offerings aimed at retail traders accustomed to always-on digital asset markets such as Bitcoin ($BTC) and Ethereum ($ETH).
The plan was first reported by Varinder Singh of CoinGape, who noted that exchanges are facing growing competition as crypto platforms expanded into traditional equities and exchange-traded products. By creating a parallel venue rather than extending its flagship market, LSEG signaled an attempt to balance retail demand for late-night trading with the operational and regulatory concerns that have historically kept equity markets confined to standard sessions.
The LSEG announcement comes as regulated venues globally reassess trading calendars in light of digital asset markets that never close. Details on listing standards, eligible products, counterparties and execution rules for the night-time venue were not disclosed in the July 21 statement, and the group has not yet named participating market makers or partners.
Industry participants will watch the rollout closely as a test of whether a centuries-old exchange can adapt its infrastructure, clearing and surveillance systems to a crypto-style continuous trading model, and whether the new window attracts enough retail flow to justify the build-out through the first half of 2027.
