London Stock Exchange to go nocturnal in 2027, because markets never sleep anymore 🌙

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

The London Stock Exchange is preparing to launch a 24 hour trading venue in the first half of 2027, joining a wave of global exchanges moving toward near-continuous trading hours. The new venue, reported by the Financial Times, will operate separately from the LSE's main market and run from 5:00 pm to 7:50 am London time, offering overnight access to exchange-traded products including those tracking UK and US stock markets. The LSE's main market will continue to operate under its standard hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

LSE CEO Julia Hoggett told the FT that there is increasing appetite from retail traders to use London, given the city's particular timezone, to gain exposure to not only UK assets but global assets. The planned venue positions the LSE alongside other exchanges and platforms expanding round-the-clock trading, including crypto-native venues that have operated continuously since inception. Cryptocurrency markets such as $BTC and $ETH trade 24/7 across global platforms, a contrast that has shaped retail expectations of traditional market access.

The move comes as multiple firms enter the race for around-the-clock stock trading, including Backpack, which recently announced plans to offer tokenized equities on a continuous basis. Tokenization efforts have accelerated across the industry, with several firms building infrastructure to settle equities on blockchain rails and offer trading outside traditional exchange hours. The LSE's overnight venue will not initially list individual equities, focusing instead on exchange-traded products that provide exposure to underlying indexes and asset classes.

Hoggett said the LSE is responding to changing patterns of retail participation, with traders in different timezones seeking London-based access to global markets. The exchange has not yet disclosed which specific exchange-traded products will be available at launch or which trading members will participate. The Financial Times reported that the LSE is coordinating with UK regulators on the new venue's structure and oversight requirements ahead of the planned 2027 debut.
