Ripple Joins x402 Foundation, Bringing XRP and RLUSD to the AI Agent Potluck 🤖

Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, joining Coinbase, Circle, Google, and Mastercard in backing the effort to standardize internet-native payments through the HTTP 402 status code. The foundation focuses on enabling machine-to-machine transactions, including those carried out by autonomous AI agents.

"As AI agents begin to take on more of the transaction lifecycle, they'll need a way to pay that's as fast and reliable as the way they already exchange data," Ripple said in an X post announcing the membership. The company added that it has been building that infrastructure on the XRP Ledger, giving developers the tools to enable agentic payments. This includes native support for the x402 protocol, which lets AI agents transact using XRP and RLUSD.

In June, Ripple released the XRPL AI Starter Kit, a developer toolkit designed to help programmers integrate agentic payment flows using XRP and RLUSD on the XRP Ledger. The kit followed earlier work on x402-compatible tooling and is part of Ripple's broader effort to position the XRPL as a settlement layer for autonomous software agents.

The x402 Foundation was established to coordinate development of the x402 standard, which repurposes the long-unused HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code to facilitate programmatic payments between clients and servers. Premier members including Coinbase, Circle, Google, and Mastercard are working alongside newer additions like Ripple to define reference implementations and developer tooling.

Ripple's expansion of x402 support on the XRP Ledger means AI agents built with the Starter Kit or compatible frameworks can settle transactions using XRP, the network's native asset, or RLUSD, Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin. The company has framed the initiative as infrastructure for a future where software agents routinely pay for compute, data, and services on their own.

Other Premier Members of the x402 Foundation include Coinbase, Circle, Google, and Mastercard, all of which have contributed to ongoing technical work around the standard. Ripple said it will continue collaborating with foundation members on protocol development, developer education, and integration support as x402 moves toward broader production use across AI-driven payment flows.
