Democrats Demand Crypto Hearings While Counting Trump's $1.4B Bag 🏛️

Five Senate Democrats are calling on their committees to hold hearings investigating the national security implications of President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency holdings, citing his 2025 financial disclosures showing roughly $1.4 billion in earnings tied to digital asset ventures. In a Friday notice, the ranking Democrats on five Senate committees — Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Gary Peters (D-MI), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) — asked their respective panels to examine what they described as foreign influence concerns. The lawmakers specifically pointed to the United Arab Emirates and unknown third parties, noting that UAE royals purchased a 49% stake in the Trump family's crypto company World Liberty Financial last year. "The disclosures heighten concerns about the president pushing Congress to pass crypto legislation in favor of the very industry he's cashing in on, the administration's moves to exempt cryptocurrencies and service providers from existing financial services regulations, and its steps to weaken enforcement, including by disbanding the Department of Justice's National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team," the senators said in a statement.

The request lands as the Senate prepares to release a final draft of the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, with a Senate vote on the legislation expected later this month. The bill advanced out of the Senate Banking Committee in May after two Democrats broke with their party to support moving it forward, though those lawmakers warned an agreement on ethics provisions remained necessary to secure floor votes. Trump has publicly defended his crypto earnings, stating there is "nothing wrong" with the $1.4 billion windfall earned while in office. According to the disclosure, more than $635 million was tied to his Trump meme coin and over $588 million came from token sales connected to World Liberty Financial, with the president additionally holding tens of millions of dollars worth of $BTC and $ETH.

Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican, continues to advocate for the bill's passage, while Representative French Hill, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee and helped shepherd the legislation through the House in 2025, said Trump's crypto ties have made enactment "more complicated." As members of the minority in both chambers, Democrats have limited power to compel hearings, though Senate rules requiring 60 votes to end a filibuster mean Republicans will need some Democratic support to pass CLARITY. The notice follows separate developments on a bipartisan housing bill containing a ban on the Federal Reserve issuing or creating a central bank digital currency until Dec. 31, 2030, which is set to become law Saturday after Trump declined to sign it and did not issue a veto, allowing the 10-day window to lapse.
