Tenev's Memecoin Pivot Turns Robinhood Chain Into a 10x TVL Rocket 🚀
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev is steering the company's newly launched Ethereum layer-2 network, Robinhood Chain, toward memecoin activity, a shift that has drawn sharp criticism from venture capitalists and mixed reactions across crypto social channels. "While we're building Robinhood Chain to be the best chain for RWA … it works great for memes too," Tenev said, reversing earlier positioning that emphasized real-world asset tokenization. Simon Dedic of Moonrock Capital pushed back, writing, "Just another L2 that offers no real value over the existing ones is exactly what we were missing. But hey, you can trade memes on it too. Someone tell Vlad it's not 2024 anymore."
The chain is already seeing measurable traction. Memecoins Cash Cat ($CASHCAT) and 4663 posted gains of 1,100% and 800% in 24 hours after Tenev's post went viral, according to on-chain data. Robinhood Chain's total value locked rose tenfold in less than a week, climbing from $10 million to $105 million, while decentralized exchange volumes on the network increased from $10 million to $52 million over the same period.
Industry data underscores why Tenev may be pursuing the strategy. Memecoin trading accounts for an estimated 40% to 50% of total trading volume on Solana and BNB Chain, two of the largest networks by TVL outside of Ethereum. Base, the Ethereum L2 operated by Coinbase, ranks fourth in memecoin market share with less than 2%. By contrast, Solana's prominence in the current cycle has been closely tied to the memecoin activity generated through launchpad PumpFun, although retail investors in those tokens have reported heavy losses and widespread scam exposure.
The pivot also highlights a contrast with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, whose centralized exchange has been slower to list memecoins, even as Base has onboarded a growing roster of such tokens. Whether the surge in Robinhood Chain's TVL and DEX activity can be sustained, and whether the network can close the gap with Base and other top Ethereum L2s, remains an open question for the weeks ahead.
