XRP Goes Quiescent as Volume Z-Score Craters, But Clearstream's Custody Nod Whispers 'Institutional

By our Markets Desk2 min read

Trading activity in XRP has cooled on Binance, with the 30-day volume Z-score falling from approximately 3.00 in March, when the token traded near $1.13, to flat levels since late March as participation and volatility declined in tandem. The contraction followed several months of elevated speculation, and the diminished trading range has historically preceded larger directional moves in price, though the direction of any subsequent move hinges on fresh liquidity returning to the market.

Demand has shifted rather than disappeared, with regional venues absorbing a larger share of activity. On Upbit, XRP was trading at roughly 1,616 KRW at press time, down from 1,673 KRW and touching an intra-day low of 1,608 KRW amid sustained selling pressure. Against that price action, 24-hour volumes reached 71.62 million XRP, equal to about $78.64 million, indicating continued active participation even as the order flow skewed bearish on the day. If global demand joins this regional activity, XRP could recover, though localized buying alone may be insufficient to reverse broader market weakness.

On the infrastructure side, Clearstream said it will add XRP along with six other cryptocurrencies to its regulated custody platform, which operates under the MiCA framework and is serviced by Crypto Finance. The listing gives institutional investors compliant access through a traditional post-trade venue rather than a crypto-native custodian, reducing operational and counterparty risk for entities required to hold assets under European regulation. Clearstream did not immediately name the other six assets alongside XRP.

The custody addition arrives as regulators continue to define frameworks for digital assets in major jurisdictions, a process market participants track closely because clearer rules typically expand the addressable investor base. For XRP, a MiCA-aligned custody path sits alongside existing exchange demand and could broaden the pool of capital that can hold the token without taking on unregulated custodial exposure. Whether that access translates into higher trading volumes or deeper order books will depend on how institutions allocate capital once the services are live.

Market data referenced in this report covers Binance spot activity, Upbit spot trading in Korean won, and the publicly disclosed custody plans of Clearstream and Crypto Finance. Figures for the 30-day volume Z-score, the 1,673 KRW local high, the 1,608 KRW intra-day low, the 71.62 million XRP daily volume and the approximate $78.64 million notional value are drawn from the cited exchange feeds and data providers at the time of publication.
