Perps Hit the Brakes: Traders Trade Leverage for Patience and On-Chain Tinkering 🧊

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Speculative activity on centralized perpetual futures exchanges has continued to ease, with cumulative trading volumes on leading venues tracking below levels recorded during the same period in 2025. Through 2026, Binance led the market with approximately $7.9 trillion in cumulative perpetual volume, followed by OKX and MEXC at nearly $4 trillion each, and Bybit at approximately $2.7 trillion.

According to data tracking centralized derivatives activity, the slowdown reflects increased trader selectivity rather than an absence of demand. Market participants have reduced leverage usage and are waiting for clearer directional signals before committing capital. The pattern indicates that speculation remains elevated but is cooling among the top exchanges.

Decentralized perpetual futures have drawn a portion of that liquidity. On-chain perpetual derivatives traded approximately $147.6 billion during Q2 of 2026, with total open interest at approximately $344.6 million. Lower transaction fees, faster settlement, and transparent, custodian-less trading have supported the shift, allowing users to execute trades efficiently through various perpetual derivative products.

Solana has continued to attract a larger share of on-chain perpetual trading activity, reinforcing its position as a preferred venue for decentralized derivatives. The redeployment of capital, rather than outright withdrawal, suggests sustained trader conviction even as leverage has eased across centralized platforms.

Centralized exchanges still dominate overall derivatives activity, but the steady migration of speculative volume on-chain points to a more distributed and competitive trading ecosystem. If on-chain innovation continues outpacing centralized offerings, derivatives liquidity may become increasingly spread across multiple venues.
