Google Gives Chrome Extensions a Crystal Ball Ban 🔮 — Prediction Markets Out by August 2026
Google has updated its Chrome Web Store Developer Program policies to explicitly prohibit extensions that facilitate real-money transactions on predictive outcomes, with enforcement set to begin on August 1, 2026. The revised language, posted to Google's developer policy blog, states, "Extensions that facilitate or enable real money transactions on predictive outcomes are not allowed," and warns that "Extensions found out of compliance after this date may face enforcement action from the Chrome Web Store."
The policy change lands as prediction market platforms Polymarket and Kalshi face heightened scrutiny from U.S. state regulators, some of whom have argued that the venues function as unlicensed sports betting operations. By extending its existing financial products policy to cover prediction markets, Google is narrowing the distribution channel through which event-contract platforms can reach retail users via browser-based wallets, trading dashboards and onramp tools.
The updated developer policy does not affect users' ability to access Polymarket or Kalshi directly through standard web browsers, and it leaves the underlying platforms' operations untouched. It does, however, bar new Chrome extensions tied to real-money prediction market activity and places existing extensions on notice to come into compliance before the August 1, 2026 deadline or risk removal from the store.
Google's enforcement window gives developers roughly 18 months to adjust their offerings, migrate functionality outside the extension format, or exit the prediction market category altogether. The move mirrors a broader pattern of platform-level restrictions on gambling-adjacent products and follows similar actions taken by app store operators against prediction market apps in prior quarters. Polymarket and Kalshi have not been named in the policy text, and Google has not publicly identified specific extensions targeted for removal.
