Blockchain's 2026 Glow-Up: $30B RWA Wake-Up Call Forces Ethereum, Solana, Base & Avalanche to Rebuild 🛠️
More than $30 billion in real-world assets (RWA) now sit on public blockchains, exposing weaknesses in throughput, settlement speed, compliance and reliability and prompting major networks to redesign their foundations rather than apply incremental upgrades. Ethereum [ETH], Solana [SOL], Base, and Avalanche [AVAX] each target distinct bottlenecks through protocol-level changes, with capital, developers and liquidity expected to favor networks that execute these upgrades successfully through 2026 and 2027.
Ethereum is leading the transition. Development on Glamsterdam accelerated in late 2025 before active devnets launched in early 2026, with mainnet deployment scheduled for H1 2026. The upgrade will raise gas limits from approximately 60 million to 200 million and introduces enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS) along with block-level access lists, providing increased settlement capabilities and preparing Ethereum to run parallel executions under the Lean roadmap.
Solana is taking a different approach. Alpenglow entered the production phase during 2025 and proceeded through testnets in Q1 to Q2 2026, with mainnet deployment planned for H2 2026. The upgrade redesigns Solana's consensus mechanism, reducing finality time from 12.8 seconds to about 100–150 ms while removing vote transactions that currently consume nearly 75% of Solana's network resources, changes intended to enhance reliability during sustained institutional utilization.
Base began developing Beryl in late 2025 to support regulated financial activity, shifting focus from programmability toward compliance features required by institutions and banks. Avalanche is pursuing its own coordinated upgrades aimed at addressing settlement and execution demands from institutional users. Together, the four networks represent a synchronized rebuild in which infrastructure quality has become the industry's main competitive advantage rather than another retail-focused cycle.
