Trilemma tug-of-war: Injective CEO warns L1s can’t speed up without giving up the chain gang

Layer-1 blockchains face mounting pressure to trade decentralization for speed and efficiency as adoption accelerates, according to Injective CEO Eric Chen. Speaking on Cointelegraph's Chain Reaction podcast on Monday, Chen said the demand for faster transactions and greater block space is putting the sector's founding principles under strain. "In our mind, it's essentially about finding scaling opportunities without compromising the fundamental pillars that define what a blockchain is," he said.

Chen framed centralization as the path of least resistance, noting it would be "a very, very easy choice to move everyone in the same data warehouse, or literally have a leader validator that calls all the shots for everyone." He cautioned that such shortcuts introduce a single point of failure, warning that "if that one server has a certain fault, the entire chain goes down." With institutional adoption and agentic AI finance driving more activity on-chain, Chen said the tension will be tested at a much larger scale.

For Injective — an interoperable layer-1 blockchain built for DeFi applications — the goal is to optimize the entire chain without reducing block time. Chen pointed to "scaling venues" featuring "dedicated zones" and layer-2 scaling to clear high-demand transactions. "It's always a constant tug-of-war, and it's about keeping the fundamental pillars and then kind of seeing where the space moves," he said.

The challenge reflects the long-standing blockchain trilemma, the principle that security, decentralization and scalability cannot all be maximized simultaneously. Pushing hard on scalability, Chen explained, tends to come at the expense of decentralization. The trilemma keeps developers weighing trade-offs as the user base expands.
