Lean Mean Ethereum Machine: Vitalik Bets 4 Years on Quantum-Proof Privacy 🤝

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has named quantum resistance, scalability and privacy as the three top priorities under a new "Lean Ethereum" strawmap that maps the network's technical direction through the end of the decade. In a post to X on Saturday, Buterin said the package of upgrades will roll out over the next three to four years and touch nearly every layer of Ethereum, a transformation he compared in scale to the September 2022 Merge that moved the network away from energy-intensive mining.

"Quantum safety has shifted up a LOT in priority," Buterin said, adding that finalizing a quantum-safe solution for blobs has "become urgent." He also elevated privacy to a "first class goal," and is pushing for the development of a new virtual machine such as leanISA or RISC-V to support programmable privacy and improved scalability. The strawmap timeline runs from 2026 through 2029.

The roadmap shift comes against a backdrop of restructuring at the Ethereum Foundation, which laid off roughly 20% of its staff last month and cut its budget by 40%. The leaner structure follows executive departures including Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stańczak, with protocol contributors Tim Beiko and Barnabé Monnot leaving in May.

Not everyone is convinced the timeline is realistic. Dankrad Feist, a researcher behind the payments-focused layer-1 Tempo blockchain, praised the plan but argued the three-to-four-year window is too slow, saying AI could help developers ship the upgrades within a year. Crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas supported the direction but cast doubt on the Ethereum Foundation's ability to hit the stated deadlines, citing a history of missed targets. Fiodorovas added that the only key feature missing from the roadmap was improved tokenomics for Ether ($ETH), which has continued to slide in price amid a broader market downturn.
